As we observe the sacred season of Lent, we are invited into a time not only of reflection, but of clarity and purpose. In 2026, our school theme, “In God’s Light, We Learn & Serve,” encourages us to see Lent through a renewed lens. A lens that focuses on how God’s light guides our learning, our relationships, and our service to others.

As a bilingual Christian school grounded in the Armenian tradition for over 35 years, Lent holds deep meaning within our community. It is a season that reminds us that faith is not lived only in prayer, but in daily actions. It is reflected in how we listen, how we forgive, how we care, and how we respond to the needs of others. Lent invites us to pause, to look inward, and to ask how we can allow God’s light to shape who we are becoming.

Rather than viewing Lent solely as a time of sacrifice or restriction, we encourage our families and students to see it as a season of intention. It is an opportunity to make space in our lives for gratitude, for compassion, and for thoughtful choices. When we step away from distractions, we make room for learning that goes beyond the classroom: learning how to be patient, how to be generous, and how to serve with humility and love.

Within our school community, Lent becomes a shared journey. As educators, we guide students to understand that serving others is a natural response to living in God’s light. Acts of kindness, respect for one another, and a willingness to help, no matter how small, become powerful lessons that shape character and faith. These moments of service reinforce that learning is not only academic, but also spiritual and moral.

St Vartan's Day | Church Service, Holy Communion & School's Progam

ՀԱՒԱՏՔՈՎ եւ ՔԱՋՈՒԹԵԱՄԲ

Հինգշաբթի, 12 Փետրուարին ՀԲԸՄ Ալեքսանտր Վարժարանի աշակերտները այցելեցին Սիտնիի Սուրբ Յարութիւն Եկեղեցի՝ ստանալու Սուրբ Հաղորդութիւն եւ օրհնութիւն եւ նշելու Վարդանանց սուրբ յիշատակը։

Աղօթքով եւ միասնական ոգիով մեր աշակերտները տարին սկսան՝ խնդրելով Աստուծոյ առաջնորդութիւնը, զօրութիւնն ու իմաստութիւնը։

Սուրբ Պատարագէն ետք, աշակերտները ներկայացուցին սրտաշարժ եւ պատկառելի յայտագիր մը՝ նուիրուած Սուրբ Վարդանին եւ 451 թուականի Աւարայրի ճակատամարտի քաջ հերոսներուն։ Աղօթքի եւ գեղարուեստական ներկայացման միջոցով անոնք պատուեցին այն հաւատքի եւ քաջութեան ժառանգութիւնը, որ դարեր շարունակ կը ներշնչէ հայ ժողովուրդը։

Թող Վարդանանց ոգին առաջնորդէ մեզ այս նոր ուսումնական տարուան ընթացքին՝ կանգնելու ամուր մեր հաւատքին մէջ, առաջնորդելու քաջութեամբ եւ քալելու միասին Աստուծոյ լոյսին ներքեւ։ ✝️

FAITH & COURAGE

On Thursday, 12 February, the students of AGBU Alexander Primary School visited the Armenian Apostolic Church of Holy Resurrection to receive Holy Communion and to commemorate the sacred feast of Vartanants.

Grounded in prayer and united as a school community, our students began the year seeking God’s guidance, strength and wisdom.

Following the Divine Liturgy, students presented a heartfelt and reverent program dedicated to St Vartan and the heroic warriors of the Battle of Avarayr (451 AD). Through prayer, reflection and performance, they honoured the enduring legacy of faith, courage and steadfast devotion that continues to inspire Armenians across generations.

As we journey through this new school year, may the spirit of Vartanants remind us to stand firm in our faith, lead with courage, and walk together in God’s light. ✝️

Commendation Award | Sarkis Demirjian & Gohar Hambardzumyan

We would like to congratulate Sarkis Demirjian & Gohar Hambardzumyan of Year 6 for being nominated and presented with the following award:

Armenian Apostolic Church's Commendation Award for the student who is deemed to maintain the values of the following criteria:

demonstrates an attitude of kindness, compassion and charity,

The award presentation occurred following the Vartanants Day schools program at the Armenian Apostolic Church of Holy Resurrection on Thursday, 12 February, 2026.

Սարգիս Տէմիրճեանը՝ ՀԲԸՄ Ալեքսանտր Վարժարանի օրինակելի, լուրջ և քաղաքավար աշակերտներէն մին է, որ իր պատասխանատու վերաբերմունքով և առաջնորդական կարողութիւններով արժանացած է Ալեքսանտր Վարժարանի Պետ աշակերտի վստահութեան։

Սարգիսը մեծ հոգատարութեամբ ու սիրով առաջնորդած է իր ընկերները և միշտ պատրաստ եղած է հասնելու թէ՛ աշակերտութեան և թէ՛ դպրոցի կարիքներուն՝ տալով իր լաւագոյնը։ Իր ուսումնառութեան ընթացքին ցոյց տուած է բարձր հետաքրքրութիւն և սէր հանդէպ Հայոց Պատմութիւնը, Կրօնքը և Հայ Մշակոյթը՝ դրսեւորելով իր ազգային ինքնագիտակցութիւնը։

Գոհար Համբարձումեանը՝ ՀԲԸՄ Ալեքսանտր Վարժարանի ուշիմ, համեստ և օրինակելի աշակերտուհիներէն մին է, որ իր քաղաքավար կեցուածքով, ազնիւ բնաւորութեամբ և պարտաճանաչ աշխատանքով կը գրաւէ թէ՛ ուսուցչական կազմին և թէ՛ իր ընկերներուն ուշադրութիւնը։

Գոհարը մեծ հետաքրքրութեամբ և սիրով կը հետեւի բոլոր դասընթացքներուն ու ջանասիրութեամբ կը մասնակցի դասարանային աշխատանքներուն՝ միշտ տալով իր լաւագոյնը։ Միշտ ժպիտը դէմքին ու բարձր տրամադրութեամբ կը յաճախէ դպրոց՝ դրական մթնոլորտ ստեղծելով իր շուրջը։

Դեռ փոքր տարիքէն Գոհարը ցոյց տուած է իր սէրը և յարգանքը հանդէպ Հայոց Պատմութիւնը, Կրօնքը և Մշակոյթը։ Դասարանէն դուրս ալ եղած է հոգատար ու ընկերասէր, միշտ պատրաստ՝ օգնութեան հասնելու իր ընկերներուն, մանաւանդ փոքրիկներուն։

Community Service | "In God’s Light, We Learn & Serve"

AGBU Alexander Primary School has a proud tradition of serving our community and guiding students to become active, caring contributors.

On Sunday, 1st February, our students were honoured to assist at the Armenian Apostolic Church of Holy Resurrection, taking part in the after-church volunteer service by offering parishioners tea, coffee, and sweets.

Moments like these strengthen their connection with the Church and the wider community, bringing our 2026 theme to life: “In God’s Light, We Learn & Serve.”

A beautiful example of faith in action and young hearts learning the joy of service. ✨

Student Leaders | Congratulations!

During our weekly School Assembly, we proudly announced our 2026 House Captains for: Ararat, Masis, Sevan & Yerevan, along with our Library Monitor.

Our House Captains will lead their houses in citizenship, sport, and school spirit - setting a positive example through behaviour, care for the environment, and participation in events such as Athletics and Cross Country.

Our Library Monitor will support our new collaborative space by assisting in the library and helping to organise resources.

We wish all our leaders every success as they work together with the School Captain to lead our school with pride, responsibility, and service in 2026 🌟

From the Classroom | Fantastic Start to Prep! 🌟

Our little learners have been busy and full of enthusiasm... from gymnastics with focus on safety, balance and movement, to getting creative with painting, drawing and play dough 🎨. We loved exploring sounds and rhythm in our very first music lesson 🎶, focusing on the letter A, and diving into The Very Hungry Caterpillar with sequencing and apple pasting activities 🍎🐛.

A joyful and active start to the year in Prep - we can’t wait for what’s ahead! 💛✨

🥞 PANCAKE DAY FUN! 🥞

Some of our junior students learned about Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day. They discussed how families celebrate this special day before the season of Lent by cooking and enjoying pancakes together.

The children were hands-on from start to finish, by helping mix the ingredients and chatting about what we needed: flour, eggs and milk. They took turns pouring, stirring and watching the mixture change before their eyes.

During cooking time, everyone excitedly watched as the batter transformed into pancakes when heated, with lots of laughter and anticipation, especially when it was time to flip them! 😄

A wonderful day of learning, teamwork and delicious fun! 🥞

Excursions | 🐛Living Worlds 🦎 & Chinese New Year 🐉

Our Years 1 and 2 students enjoyed an exciting and hands-on learning experience at "Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden" as part of their “Living World” excursion.

The day was filled with discovery as students:
🔍 Went on a bushwalk and bug hunt.
🐢 Learned about life cycles and met native animals - including feeding long-neck turtles with pieces of prawn.
💧 Explored aquatic habitats through dip-netting and studying water creatures.
🌱 Discovered how plants can be used in everyday life by rubbing lemon myrtle leaves to create natural “soap”.

Through these activities, students developed a deeper understanding of living things, their environments, and how they grow, change, and reproduce.

A wonderful day of curiosity, learning, and connection with nature! 🌏

🐉 CELEBRATING CHINESE NEW YEAR 🐉

Our youngest students had a truly wonderful day celebrating the Chinese New Year at the “Chinese Garden of Friendship” at Darling Harbour.

The children were captivated by the traditional “Dragon Dance” and were especially excited when the dragons came up close, allowing them to gently feel and experience this cultural tradition firsthand.

As they explored the beautiful gardens together, students eagerly counted how many Eastern Water Dragon lizards they could spot and delighted in feeding the Koi fish as they trekked around the garden pathways.🌿🐟

What a joyful and enriching way to celebrate the Chinese New Year! 🧧

Visitors & Guests | Hripsime Hakobyan, Martin Mkrtchyan & son Leo

On Friday, 13 February, Hripsime Hakobyan visited AGBU Alexander Primary School, accompanied by her husband, renowned singer Martin Mkrtchyan, and their son, Leo, who proudly represented Armenia at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

The school community warmly welcomed the guests, giving students the opportunity to meet them and learn more about their musical journeys. The visit included a special musical exchange, with students performing a song, followed by a beautiful performance by Hripsime and Leo. The guests also enjoyed touring the classrooms and engaging with students throughout the school.

Hripsime Hakobyan’s visit coincided with her invitation to perform at the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Armenian Apostolic Church of Holy Resurrection, making the occasion a truly memorable one for the entire school community.

Visitors & Guests | Dr Hrayr & Arda Jebejian and Rev. Viken Cholakian

We were honoured to welcome Dr Hrayr Jebejian and his wife Dr Arda Jebejian to AGBU Alexander Primary School during their visit to Sydney.

Through Dr Jebejian’s initiative and Dr Arda Jebejian’s translation from German to Armenian, the Arabian Gulf Bible Society published “Children’s Bible – Let’s Read and Tell Together”, which has been generously donated to our students. Each child was delighted to receive their own copy of this beautifully prepared book.

This meaningful visit was a true blessing for our school community, enriching our students’ spiritual journey and encouraging a love of reading and faith-based learning.

In the year where our theme is "In God's Light, We learn and Serve", we extend our sincere gratitude to Dr Hrayr and Dr Arda Jebejian for their generosity, dedication, and continued support of Armenian education worldwide. 🙏📖

During his trip to Sydney, the Head of the Armenian Evangelical Community of Greece, Reverend Viken Cholakian, paid a visit to the school. He was accompanied by the Head of the Armenian Evangelical Church, Reverend Hagop Sarkissian, and Garo Soghomonian.

The guests were warmly received and accompanied by the Principal, Manoug Demirjian, as they toured the school, visited classrooms, and engaged with students. The visit also provided a valuable opportunity to discuss the educational challenges faced by the Armenian diaspora community in Greece, fostering meaningful dialogue and shared understanding.
