On the eve of the 35th Anniversary Celebrations of the AGBU Alexander Primary School, we come together as a community to Honour the Past, Embrace the Present and Inspire the Future of a legacy rooted in the preservation of our heritage, language, and identity.

The Armenian language is not merely a means of communication - it is a vital thread in the fabric of our people's survival. Far from our homeland, its importance becomes even more profound. Without it, we risk drifting away from our traditions, values, and the essence of who we are as Armenians.

More than 35 years ago, the Armenian General Benevolent Union recognised the urgent need to pass on this priceless inheritance to our children in the diaspora. In 1990, through tireless dedication, AGBU established the Alexander Primary School in Sydney - a nurturing environment where Armenian children could grow, learn, and thrive within a culturally rich and supportive atmosphere.

For centuries, Armenian schools have been the source of light for our people, shaping generations through education and culture. Alexander Primary School continues this noble mission, not only fostering Armenian identity but also providing high-quality education through modern and engaging teaching methods.

As we get ready to mark this milestone, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to every member of the AGBU Alexander Primary School family - students, parents, educators, and supporters. May our journey forward be marked by continued success, growth, and an unwavering commitment to our heritage.

«ՀԱՅ ԼԵԶՈՒ» կենսական մէկ մասնիկը մեր ժողովուրդի գոյատեւման։

Հայրենիքէն հեռու, որքան զգալի է Հայ լեզուին կարեւորութիւնը մեր ժողովուրդին համար։ Առանց Հայ լեզուին մեր կեանքը հեռու պիտի մնայ Հայ աւանդութիւններէն, արժէքներէն, սրբութիւններէն եւ վերջապէս պիտի պարպուի հայու հարազատ ինքնութենէն։

Աւելի քան 35-տարիներ առաջ, Հայկական Բարեգործական Ընդհանուր Միութիւնը, Սփիւռքեան այս հեռաւոր ափերուն վրայ կարիքն զգաց, Հայ մանուկներուն տալ այն թանկագին գանձը, որ կտակուած էր մեզ մեր նախահայրերէն։

1990-ին, Սիտնիի ՀԲԸՄ.եան տքնաջան աշխատանքի արդիւնքը, ապահովեց Սփիւռքեան այս հեռաւոր ափերուն վրայ հիմնել Ալեքսանտր Վարժարանը՝ Հայեցի մտերմիկ մթնոլորտի մէջ ընդունելու եւ դաստիարակելու Հայ մանուկին։

Հայկական Վարժարանը դարեր շարունակ եղած է Հայ ժողովուրդի լոյսի աղբիւրը, Հայ մշակոյթով սերունդներ կերտելու եւ հայ ժողովուրդը կենսունակ պահելու համար։

Ալեքսանտր Վարժարանը ահաւասիկ այնպիսի հաստատութիւն մըն է որ իր Հայակերտիչ առաքելութեան կողքին կ’ապահովէ նաեւ իր յարկին տակ ուսանող Հայ մանուկին ուսման բոլոր կարիքները բարձրորակ մակարդակով եւ հաճելի ու արդիական ուսուցման մեթոտներով։

35 ամեակի սեմին, իմ շնորհաւորութիւնները կ’ուղղեմ ՀԲԸՄ Ալեքսանտր Վարժարանի մեծ ընտանիքի բոլոր անդամներուն, մաղթելով որ մեր յառաջ քայլերով ձեռք ձգենք նորանոր յաջողութիւններ։

Cultural Experience | Feast of the Holy Ascension (Hambardzum)

Համբարձման Տօն - Վիճակ - Ջան Գիւլում

Իւրաքանչիւր ազգի ստեղծագործական միտքը կը դրսեւորուի ազգային սովորութիւններու և աւանդութիւններու մէջ: Մեր ժողովուրդը մինչեւ այսօր պահպաներ է շատ հետաքրքիր աւանդութիւնները, որոնցմէ մէկն է Ջան Գիւլումը:

Հայ ժողովուրդը՝ Համբարձման տօնը անուանած է նաեւ Վիճակ, որը կապուած է Քրիստոսի մահէն ետք առաքեալներուն և աշակերտներուն ժողովի ընթացքին Պետրոս առաքեալի առաջարկութեամբ մատնիչ Յուդայի փոխարէն վիճակահանութեամբ 12րդ առաքեալի ընտրութեան հետ:

Յարութենէ ետք Յիսուս կը շրջէր երկրի վրայ: Կ'երեւէր իր աշակերտներուն, որպէսզի տեսնէին ու հաւատային որ ինքը ողջ է: 40րդ օրը 11 առաքեալներուն հետ կը բարձրանայ Ձիթենեաց լեռը, կ'օրհնէ իրենց պատուիրելով մկրտել բոլոր ազգերուն՝ Հօր, Որդու և Սուրբ Հոգիի անունով: Անկէ վերջ Յիսուս՝ Իր աշակերտներուն աչքին առջեւ կը բարձրանայ երկինք ու ամպը կը ծածկէ զինք:

Յիսուս Համբարձաւ, գնաց, սակայն մարդկանց թողեց Հաւատք, Յոյս և Սէր: Հաւատքով մենք կը ճանչնանք Աստուած, Յոյսով մենք կը մօտենանք Աստծոյ, իսկ Սիրով մենք կը միաւորուինք Աստծոյ հետ:

Յիսուս Համբարձաւ, որպէսզի Իր երկնաւոր Հօր առջեւ բարեխօսէ Իր սիրելիներուն համար: Համբարձաւ, որպէսզի Ան վստահութիւն տայ յուսալու, որ մենք նոյնպէս մարմնով պիտի մտնենք յաւիտենական կեանք:

Տիրոջ պատուիրանի համաձայն Իր Առաքեալներէն երկուքը Սուրբ Դաթէոսը և Սուրբ Բարթողոմիոսը եկան Հայաստան և իրենց քարոզչութիւններով հիմնեցին մեր Սուրբ Առաքելական Եկեղեցին:

Հայոց Եկեղեցին ծննդավայրն է Հայ Հոգւոյն, Բարձր բերդը հաւատքի, լոյսի փարոսը կեանքի: Հայոց եկեղեցին տունն է ամէն մէկ Հայի ու ամէն մէկ հայ օջախի, ուր դարեր շարունակ հայ հայրերն ու մայրերը իրենց զաւակներուն սներ են Քրիստոնէական յաւերժական պատգամներով:

Համբարձման տօնէն մէկ օր առաջ Չորեքշաբթի օրը, հարսերն ու աղջիկները 7 աղբիւրէ ջուր, 7 տեսակ ծաղիկ և 7 քար կը հաւաքեն ու կը լեցնեն կուժի կամ կաւէ ամանի մը մէջ: Դաշտերէն ու այգիներէն ծաղիկներ կը հաւաքեն ու փունջեր կը կազմեն, որոնցմէ մէկը խաչաձեւ կ'ըլլայ, այդ խաչաձեւ փունջը՝ տօնի աւարտին կը նուիրեն եկեղեցիին:

Կուժը կը զարդարեն գեղեցիկ ծաղիկներով ու կը ծածկեն սպիտակ քօղով ու կը ձգեն բարձր տեղ մինչեւ յաջորդ առաւօտ, որպէսզի համբարձման գիշերուայ աստղազարդ երկնքի լոյսով լուսաւորուին ծաղիկները և առաւօտուայ ցողով օծուին վիճակի ծաղիկները:

Հինգշաբթի առաւօտեան, Ջան Գիւլումի մասնակցողները տունէ տուն կը շրջին ու Տան Տիրուհիներուն, տան հարսերուն և աղջիկներուն կը նուիրեն ծաղկեփունջեր և իրենցմէ կը ստանան կաթ, բրինձ, հաւկիթ, քաղցրեղէններ, պտուղ և երբեմն ալ մանր դրամ: Վիճակահանութենէն ետք երեխաները կ'երթան այգիներ, դաշտեր կաթնապուր ուտելու: Վիճակահանութեան ժամանակ բոլորը կ'երգեն ու կը պարեն ժողովրդական երգեր ու պարեր:

The creative thought of each nation is expressed in its national customs and traditions. Our people have preserved many interesting traditions to this day, one of which is Jan Ghuloum.

The Armenian people have also called the Feast of the Ascension Vijak, which is related to the selection of the 12th apostle after the death of Christ. During the gathering of the apostles and disciples, Peter the Apostle suggested casting lots to replace Judas, the betrayer, with the 12th apostle.

After the Ascension, Jesus walked on earth. He appeared to His disciples so that they could see and believe that He was alive. On the 40th day, He ascended the Mount of Olives with the eleven apostles, blessed them, and commanded them to baptise all nations in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. After this, Jesus ascended to heaven before the eyes of His disciples, and a cloud covered Him.

Jesus ascended, but He left people with Faith, Hope, and Love. Through Faith, we recognise God, through Hope, we approach God, and through Love, we unite with God.

Jesus ascended to intercede for His loved ones before His Heavenly Father. He ascended to assure us that we also will enter eternal life.

According to the Lord's command, two of His Apostles, Saint Thaddeus and Saint Bartholomew, came to Armenia. Through their preaching, they established our Holy Apostolic Church.

The Armenian Church

Is the birthplace of the Armenian soul,

The High Fortress of Faith,

The Lighthouse of Life.

The Armenian Church is the home of every Armenian and every Armenian household, where for centuries, Armenian fathers and mothers have nurtured their children with the eternal Christian message.

The day before the Ascension Feast, on Wednesday, the brides and girls collect water from seven springs, seven types of flowers, and seven stones, filling a jug or a clay pot. They gather flowers from the fields and gardens and make bouquets, one of which is shaped like a cross. At the end of the feast, the cross-shaped bouquet is offered to the church.

The jug or the pot is decorated with beautiful flowers and covered with a white cloth, and is left in a high place until the next morning, so that the flowers are illuminated by the starry sky of Ascension night and are blessed by the morning dew.

On Thursday morning, the participants of Jan Ghuloum go from house to house, giving flower bouquets to the mistresses of the house, brides, and girls, in return for which they receive milk, rice, eggs, sweets, fruit, and sometimes small amounts of money. After the lottery, the children go to the gardens and fields to eat rice pudding. During the lottery, everyone sings and dances to folk songs.

The activity fostered collaboration and creativity, with students taking pride in braiding the dough and shaping their pastries before baking. The school was filled with the delightful aroma of freshly baked Choreg, and the final tasting session was a highlight for all involved.

Once again, this was another activity to deepen the students' understanding and appreciation of their Armenian heritage.

Thank You to all the parents who joined us for our “Mum & Me Activity Afternoon”. It was a heartwarming afternoon filled with fun, creativity and connections as we celebrated the incredible women in our lives – mothers, grandmothers, and all mother figures.

Healthy Breakfast | @Alexander School

Thanks to the fantastic efforts of our students and teachers, we held a successful and delicious healthy breakfast! The event highlighted how quick and easy it can be to start the day with nutritious food - an important habit for growing minds and bodies. To encourage healthy routines at home, each student also received a special water bottle designed to infuse fruit for extra flavour.

Excursion | The Schoolhouse Museum

During the last week of term, our Year 1 & 2 students stepped back in time during their visit to the NSW Schoolhouse Museum, diving into the fascinating world of schooling from over a century ago. Their inquiry focused on how school and daily life have evolved -and what has stayed the same. They explored questions like: What was school like for children and teachers in the past? What parts of old-school life still exist today? How has technology transformed learning and living?

Students experienced history firsthand through a variety of hands-on activities. They practised writing on slates with slate pencils and tried their hand at using pen and ink - just like students did in the 1800s. They also got moving with dumbbell exercises that were once part of the school day in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The adventure continued as they examined historical artefacts, made toast over an open fireplace to enjoy with jam, and explored classroom objects used more than 100 years ago. It was a day full of discovery, curiosity, and connection to the past!

Excursion | The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Junior students were treated to a magical theatre experience at Glen Street Theatre! 🎭🦋

They watched the beloved classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar come to life on stage, along with three other enchanting Eric Carle favourites — Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, Ten Little Rubber Ducks, and The Very Busy Spider.

From giggles to gasps of wonder, the joy on their faces said it all. It was a truly unforgettable day filled with colour, imagination, and storytelling magic! 🌈📚✨

Visitors | Mr Hayk Petrosyan & Mr Gegham Stepanyan

AGBU Alexander Primary School had the pleasure of welcoming renowned Armenian singer/actor Hayk Petrosyan and his band for a special visit that delighted both students and staff.

The highlight of the visit was a special school assembly held in honour of the guests. As a warm welcome, the students performed the well loved Australian tune “Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree”, which brought smiles to all present and set a cheerful tone for the morning.

In response, Hayk Petrosyan shared a cultural gift of his own – an Armenian rendition of a bird song, performing the traditional tune Gakavig. His engaging and spirited delivery captivated the young audience, who were amused and intrigued by the similarities and differences in musical storytelling between the two cultures.

Following the assembly, Hayk and his band were given a tour of the school, where they visited several classrooms and had the opportunity to interact with the students more closely.

AGBU Alexander Primary School sincerely thanks the Armenian Apostolic Church of Holy Resurrection Sydney, Australia including Fr Avetis Hambarzumyan and Fr Ashot Abrahamyan for the opportunity. In particular, Hayk Petrosyan and his band for their time, talent, and generosity in sharing the richness of Armenian music and culture. Their visit to Sydney was part of the “Merci Charles” tour.

Alexander School had the privilege of welcoming Mr Gegham Stepanyan, the Human Rights Defender of Artsakh, along with a delegation from the Armenian National Committee (ANC). Mr Stepanyan was warmly greeted by our principal, staff and students before touring the school and visiting classrooms. Our students had the opportunity to meet and speak with Mr Stepanyan, who took the time to engage with them personally.

Mr Stepanyan was in Sydney as the keynote speaker at the 110th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide National Commemoration evening.
